In Milwaukee, there is an urban sanctuary within the Washington Park community. This urban sanctuary is the repository of stories from those who came before us, those who are here now and a vision for those who come after. These stories come from the different cultures that now reside within this community. Each story, like a fiber, comes together to weave a garment that drapes Washington Park and embellishes the urban sanctuary. As multi-discipline artists using the medium of film, we are engaged and committed to bringing these stories to the big screen. This urban sanctuary, one of the many sub-communities within Washington Park, is made up of Hmong, Latino, Kenyon, African American, European and other families each with their own unique story to tell.
This film will show the hidden wealth and diverse cultures of the community and serve as a historic preservation of neighborhood identity. Through interviews, storytelling, film footage, photos and other archival footage Washington Park: The Making Of An Urban Sanctuary will move you through the neighborhood and view why residents have stayed and view what they are doing to maintain and nurture the elders, young adults and the children. We will talk with the pioneers in the neighborhood and ask how they came to be there. This film will demonstrate that while the Washington Park community is not unlike any other community within the city, it has potential based on it's cultural creators, history, elders and leaders.
